"My son is Cameron Smith, a Virginia developed 97 birth year player, who is currently playing Junior A hockey at the age of 15. Cameron had been the leading goal scorer on his Washington Little Capitals team every year he played and his goal scoring touch has instantly transferred to the higher level of play. Now he is turning the heads of USHL and D1 college team scouts!
It is tempting to think of goal scoring as something that is natural, you have it or you don’t. Maybe so to some degree but as part of Cameron’s very early training we invested heavily working with Darren. Why? Because if you want to score goals doesn’t it make sense to work with someone who understands what goaltenders do? Darren worked with Cameron on many things including disguising his release, fakes and dekes and understanding the signs a goaltender might give him in terms of shot or move selection. All in all we attribute Cameron’s prolific goal scoring abilities in large part to the instruction he received from Darren Hersh."
